I have $10k in 401k from an old employer with fidelity. I also have a Roth IRA at Schwab. I would like to rollover the 401k into the Roth IRA. I know I will have to pay taxes on the $10k, but from my understanding you can pay the tax bill separately so the entire $10k can go into the Roth IRA. Schwab says I should first start a traditional IRA with them, then move 401k money from fidelity into the traditional IRA, then rollover into Roth IRA. Why is this? Does it somehow make taxes easier? Why
