On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 21, 2026, United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) announced third-quarter earnings per share of $2.54. Higher fuel expenses tested airline profitability across the industry, but investments in customer service and pricing discipline helped protect operating margins. Three things management said stand out. United Airlines is installing Starlink, a high-speed satellite Wi-Fi service owned by Space Exploration Technologies, across its aircraft fleet to attract high-value passengers from competitors. Management expects this technology edge to increase unit revenue, or revenue earned per seat mile flown, as more travelers switch carriers. Jet fuel prices spiked near the end of the quarter and raised total operating expenses for the carrier. United Airlines raised ticket yields, or average fare paid per mile, to recover nearly three-quarters of that cost increase while maintaining demand.
