Costco is known as the sort of place where you can come in to buy essentials like milk and eggs and walk out with a cart full of items you never expected to buy. Part of that boils down to Costco’s famous treasure hunt approach. Costco’s member retention strategy hinges on several facets. The company aims to offer maximum value without sacrificing product quality. Costco also strategically adds new products to its lineup regularly to keep members engaged and excited to return to the store. And now, Costco shoppers have a reason to make room in their carts for a sweet treat. The warehouse club has introduced a new dessert: Cookies & Cream Cupcakes. The offering is already a hit, and for good reason. Costco gives members another reason to visit its bakery Costco’s bakery has become a destination in its own right, with large packages and competitive prices helping the retailer stand out from traditional grocery stores. The latest cupcake offering builds on that appeal by combining an accessible price with a flavor many consumers already know and enjoy. The new cupcakes are “basically Oreos in cupcake form,” according to Sporked. They feature fluffy cake studded with cookie crumbles and generous buttercream frosting topped with more cookie pieces. The combination takes a familiar flavor pairing and gives it a bakery-style makeover. And in typical Costco fashion, the price point is outstanding. A 12-package of these generous-sized cupcakes costs $8.99. Costco introduces Cookies & Cream Cupcakes. The combination has long been popular in ice cream, milkshakes, cakes, and other desserts. Still, Costco’s cupcake launch highlights a retail strategy that goes beyond offering low prices. Costco’s management team underscored the importance of that approach during the company’s most recent earnings call. “Through a relentless focus on value, quality and newness, we delivered consistently strong comparable sales growth in Q4,” said CFO Gary Millerchip. Millerchip also highlighted the bakery’s performance, noting that fresh comparable sales increased by mid-single digits, led by bakery and meat. He added that growth in the bakery department reflected Costco’s success in introducing new and indulgent items at attractive prices. That makes the Cookies & Cream Cupcakes a fitting example of the company’s broader merchandising strategy. Costco can keep familiar favorites available while introducing new variations that encourage members to explore its selection. The new cupcakes may not be a revolutionary dessert, but they don’t have to be. A recognizable flavor and a low per-item price create a compelling combination for shoppers — one that feels new and fresh, despite the simplicity. Maurie Backman owns shares of Costco.
