The Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) cryptocurrency was named after the famous "Doge" internet meme. The two friends who created it in 2013 were trying to lighten the mood in the crypto industry, because at the time, many enthusiasts believed Bitcoin was on the cusp of transforming the entire financial system. Dogecoin has no real utility, but that didn't stop speculative investors from latching onto the meme-coin. It soared to an all-time high of $0.73 per coin in 2021, which translated to a market capitalization of over $90 billion, so it was suddenly worth more than most companies in the S&P 500 index. Unfortunately, speculative frenzies never last, so Dogecoin has since lost almost 90% of its value and trades at just $0.08 per coin as I write this (Oct. 18). But developers are trying to revive the ecosystem with innovations like DogeOS, so could a fresh rally to $1 per coin be on the table as we move into 2027?
