The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI) launched in May 2001 just as the tech bubble was going bust. It was one of the worst times to debut, but the fund's strategy as an ultra-low-cost way to invest in the entire U.S. equity market was sound. Since its inception, it's still managed to produce an average annual return of roughly 9.4%. That means a $10,000 investment in the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF has turned into more than $102,000 over its lifetime. Image source: Getty Images.
