Jack in the Box has been serving burgers, tacos, and all-day breakfast to customers across the United States for more than 70 years. But the fast-food chain’s footprint has been shrinking, with another location now preparing to close permanently. The Jack in the Box restaurant at 8829 S. 180th Street in Kent, Washington, will shut down on December 2, 2026, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed on October 5. The closure will affect 15 employees. This upcoming shutdown follows two other Jack in the Box closure notices in Washington this year. Everett: The restaurant at 1505 SE Everett Mall Way, scheduled to close on October 10, affecting 24 employees. Anacortes: The location at 2820 Commercial Avenue, scheduled to close on June 23, impacting 14 workers. Together, the three closures affect 53 employees. The latest announcement comes as Jack in the Box continues implementing a nationwide restructuring plan aimed at eliminating underperforming restaurants. Jack in the Box plans more closures nationwide In April 2025, Jack in the Box announced its JACK on Track turnaround strategy, targeting 150 to 200 underperforming restaurants for closure. Many of those restaurants had operated for more than three decades. By September 2025, the company had closed 51 locations under the program, while its total closures for fiscal 2025 reached 86. TheStreet reported in July 2026 that roughly 70 restaurants had already closed since the turnaround initiative was announced. The company’s subsequent financial results provide a clearer picture of its shrinking footprint. Jack in the Box closed 40 restaurants during the first three quarters of fiscal 2026: 14 closures in the first quarter, 9 in the second, 17 in the third quarter, ending July 5. Combined with the earlier 51 JACK on Track closures reported through September 2025, that brings the documented closures across those periods to at least 91, although not every fiscal 2026 closure has been identified as part of the turnaround program. In August, Jack in the Box also revised its fiscal 2026 outlook, narrowing its earlier announced expected closures of 50-100 to 50-60 restaurants. With 40 already closed through July 5, the revised projection implies another 10 to 20 closures during Q4, which ended September 27. The company has not yet reported its Q4 earnings, which are expected in November. Jack in the Box continues to close restaurants, having already closed 40 in first three quarters. Joe Hendrickson / Getty Images Jack in the Box struggles with declining sales Jack in the Box operated 2,115 restaurants as of July 5, down from 2,168 a year earlier, according to its latest quarterly SEC filing. During the third quarter alone, it closed 17 restaurants while opening four, resulting in a net reduction of 13 locations. The company also reported a 1.1% decline in same-store sales, primarily driven by fewer customer transactions, partially offset by higher prices. The quick-service restaurant has acknowledged that its closure program is progressing more slowly than originally expected, partly because franchisees must evaluate lease obligations and other financial considerations before shutting locations.
