Apple Goes Its Own Way On AI

Tech got wrecked last week as fears over AI spending, debt loads, and high valuations dominated the market narrative. Alphabet (GOOGL) lost half a trillion dollars in one session, Intel (INTC) recorded its worst trading day on record, while Microsoft's (MSFT) $25B bond sale and Meta's (META) $95B stock sale added to the worries. But as a new week begins, will the ghosts and scares that haunted investors fly away? Market test: The AI arms race is so expensive right now that even companies with deep pockets are borrowing heavily to fund it. Apple is unique among the hyperscalers, with an annual capex hovering around the $10B range, compared to the likes of Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta, which have each guided anywhere from $100B to $200B in capex for 2026. It has also weighed heavily on these giants, turning free cash flow negative across much of the group and drying up capital that previously went towards share buybacks and expanding dividends. Apple (AAPL) is a different story. The iPhone maker has insulated its balance sheet and cash flows from the investor scrutiny that comes with it. However, it's a tradeoff.
